As our climate changes it is important to look to varieties that handle our conditions. Fiano is such a strong contender in that department. Originally from Campania, the variety almost died out due to the minuscule crop that vine produced each year but it was able to maintain its livelihood as the growers embraced the flavours, texture and quality that the variety produced. View Road Wines became obsessed with the variety, due to the flavour intensity, texture and vibrancy of the wine, when they worked at Coriole for a period and set about finding a region that is suited to the particulars of the variety and clone.
Ricca Terra Farms has been pioneering warm climate viticulture and View Road Wines found that they have been producing top quality grapes sustainably in these areas. Ricca Terra Farms Fiano was dry grown in Waikerie on a sand stone vineyard near the Murray River. In 2015 we hand-picked our Fiano on the 2nd of February and allowed it to start wild whole bunch ferment before being pressed to a mix of used French oak Hogsheads and stainless steel. After 5 months on gross lees the wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered with no additions, except minimal sulphur.
